Father's Day

On Father’s Day, do you know the true story behind the celebration?

Several theories exist about the origins of this day, but the most widely accepted is that it began in the USA in 1909 when Sonora Luise decided to honour her military father, who had raised her and her five siblings after their mother passed away. She first celebrated the day on 19 June 1910, his birthday. However, Father’s Day was not officially recognised until 1972, when President Richard Nixon declared it to be on the third Sunday of June.

Another theory suggests the celebration dates back to Babylon in 2000 BC, where a boy named Elmesu carved a clay tablet to wish his father health, happiness, and many more years of life.

In the USA and other American countries, as well as in France, Ireland, and Japan, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. In countries with a Catholic tradition, such as Portugal, Spain, and Italy, it is celebrated on 19 March, St Joseph’s feast day.

While Father’s Day may be celebrated on different dates globally, what truly matters is taking time to appreciate and celebrate our fathers and the dedication they show every day.

Happy Father's Day!
